Our customers are at the heart of everything we do. Over the years, we have gained many loyal customers who are now a part of our Sundari Silks family. This festive season, we are thrilled to feature our Sundari Patrons, 6 inspiring women who have a long-standing relationship with Sundari Silks. The common thread that unites them is the emotional bond they share with us. Most of them, have been our customers since the very beginning and have played a huge part in making our journey so beautiful.
When we reached out to these 6 remarkable women, they were more than happy to pose graciously in our Diwali Collection and also chatted with us about their love for sarees, personal style and nostalgic memories with Sundari Silks.
Presenting to you, Poornima Ramaswamy, a National award-winning costume designer and stylist who has worked in films such as Paradesi, Soorarai Pottru, 36 Vayadhinilae and Irudhi Suttru. She comes from a textile family and enjoys working with natural fabrics for her projects. When Poornima reminisced about her first memory of the saree, it took us all back in time to when we saw our mothers and grandmothers draped in sarees. Fashion, trends and textiles are not new to her and we had a great time chatting with her.
Here are a few excerpts from the chat session.
How did your tryst with Sundari Silks begin?
Sundari Silks opened when I was 18. The shop was right around the corner from my house and used to be our go-to place to shop for sarees. I think my dad introduced me to Sundari Silks. My first Silk Saree was from Sundari Silks. So I think my relationship with Sundari goes a long way back.
Do you have any special memories with Sundari Silks?
When I was 18, my cousin was about to get married. So my dad just took me to Sundari Silks and bought 5 silk sarees for 5 occasions. Then my brother got married and again I got all my sarees from Sundari. My earliest memory of every occasion has been only pattu sarees from Sundari Silks and they are still my favourite sarees.
The one thing you like the most about Sundari Silks
I like the fact that everything is so transparent and you don’t have to check the quality. If they say it is a Jaipur print, it is not a screen print. And if it is a screen print, they will tell you that upfront. Everything is so authentic.
Another thing I love about Sundari Silks is that is it so personal. Everything has become so virtual now. But I am very old school. When I enter Sundari, it feels like I am entering a home. And most of the people who work there have seen me since I was a child and they greet me with so much affection. Someone from the family is always there to help you pick fabrics and talk about what happened during the day. In fact, my own family store, I have not visited for many years. But I come to Sundari Silks every other week. I also love the Pooja which happens in the morning and the whole energy is just so beautiful.
Describe your personal style.
My personal style is very classic and vintage. I either wear Silk Sarees or Cotton, nothing in-between. I wear only white blouses for most of my sarees. My earliest memory of a saree is seeing my grandmother wearing it with a white blouse since my granddad passed away. I found it so beautiful and started teaming my saree with whites.
Favourite purchase from Sundari Silks.
A favourite purchase I would say is that of an Ajrakh Cotton Saree. I love the natural fabrics and craftsmanship of our Country. Even for work, my first request to the team is that I want to deal with natural fabrics. So automatically, my first go-to is Sundar Silks.
What is the first word that comes to your mind when you hear Sundari Silks?
Nostalgia.
We had a great time chatting with Poornima Ramaswamy and wish her the best of luck in all her future endeavours. We also hope to be a part of many more special occasions in her life.
In the pictures shown above, Poornima is wearing a Traditional Kanjivaram Silk Saree from our Mathappu Collection 2022. The saree has a distinct weaving style and features burgundy-red and green lines across the body which form checkered patterns. The pallu is simple and elegant with muthu seer zari lines.
